I’ve been trying to wrap my head around which album I was going to kick this off with, because I wanted to start off with an artist who made me fall in love with R&B as I started really diving into my connection with the genre.
Ladies and Gentlemen: H.E.R.,
After almost a week of her debut album being available to the world, H.E.R. has finally let the door cracked revealing her soul on the masterpiece that is “Back On My Mind”. #BOMM is sonically a place of euphoria causing you to live in the moment. Enjoying the time you have with either your love ones or just by yourself. H.E.R. once again explores the deeper meaning of love by reigning in her known slow-burning contemporary R&B production.
Some stand out tracks for me were majority solo works like the bliss “Closer To Me” a song that takes you back to Drake’s Comeback Season mixtape era where you heard that amazing #Goapele sample for the first time. Or “Lucky” a symphonic anthem showcasing the importance of self-worth to your partner, making sure they don’t forget who they have holding them tight at the end of the day & don’t get me started on the #Darkchild produced “Exhausted”, a dynamic yet headshaking hymn that’ll make you text your potential lover’s phone faster than you can finish the damn song . But a collab that stuck out the most for me was the undercover all-star collaboration “Bloody Waters” [#Kaytranada Produced w/ #Thundercat on the Bass] creating a deep #MarvinGaye Inspired setting on the industry H.E.R. has been facing behind closed doors, showing that even the best still face discrimination from corporate head honchos.
Overall H.E.R. has created transportation for the public to access her world. All 21 songs are non-skippable [including the singles because SHE DID THAT!] making sure that you are comfortable and able to enjoy the ride. Catch some of my favorite tracks from #BOMM on my monthly playlist, “JESON’S JAMZ” located in the link above. - JC
